I've been wading through oceans of brown Ampex, retrieving recordings of songs written as far back as 1972, some of which I have not listened to since. Now baked and transferred to CD I can complete my catalogue of songwriter material. It has been a weird and wonderful experience, and it is extraordinary how closely I remember the stories and circumstances that triggered each and every song.

But of course the past only leads to now and I have been busy working on new songs. I've been very lucky in working with Paul Moran, who is a fantastic keyboards player and arranger. I've recorded two new tracks for the Closer compilation album which are jazzier than some of my earlier material - it fits my love of reinventing myself, trying new styles whilst never compromising my own identity.

People ask, what kind of songs do you write? I've never come up with a satisfactory answer. I dislike labels. I've never fitted neatly into any one category - I like to push boundaries and take a risk.

I should love to write for theatre again, as ten years ago I wrote and performed in Flowers from Detroit and that was one of the best times I remember. The sequel is overdue! I have two musical ideas that have got to the sketching stage. I enjoy the idea of songs carrying drama and emotion.

I am looking forward to my gigs at Pizza on the Park on 6 & 7 of June. Paul Moran will be the MD and I know we’ll have a ball. While I’m not planning many gigs in the future I see live shows as the perfect moment to introduce new songs into the arena. To me as a songwriter that’s the most exciting thing of all.
